Master of Science in Nutrition and Human Performance

The Master of Science in Nutrition and Human Performance (MSNHP) degree is an interdisciplinary, comprehensive graduate program designed to analyze diet and health status, assess nutrition deficiencies and offer clients evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle recommendations. Students are prepared to assess and design nutrition plans to maximize human performance, manage nutrition and content of health and corporate wellness programs, and provide clinical nutrition expertise as an integral member of a collaborative healthcare team.

The recipient of the MSNHP degree will have advanced knowledge of nutrition and how to maximize human performance through the holistic integration of nutrition biochemistry, human metabolism and metabolic processes, health promotion and wellness, as well as the research methodologies used in nutrition. Graduates find careers in public health, education, nutrition and health communications, as well as consulting positions in nutrition-specific industries and businesses in private and public sectors designed to maximize human performance.

The program provides the academic background necessary to complete several outside certifications. Emphasis is placed on the development of practical knowledge, understandings, and skills for a holistic and personalized approach to providing meaningful client-centered consultations.

Masters Level Goals:

  1. Knowledge

Students will demonstrate content and professional knowledge necessary for successful performance in their field by:

  • Evaluating  the dynamic nature of nutrition and the complex biochemical factors that influence metabolism, performance, and health status
  • Applying behavior change principles to nutrition counseling for dietary and lifestyle changes
  • Performing nutrition assessments and developing personalized plans based on individuals’ needs and goals
  • Demonstrating positive communication skills and techniques

 

  1. Service

Students will demonstrate willingness to use their skills to benefit and serve society by:

  • Applying evidence-based information to nutrition and performance programs
  • Integrating evidenced-based research information from professional education and experiences into practice
  • Developing and presenting nutrition information to benefit individuals, society, and special populations
  • Evaluating social responsibilities associated with nutrition, exercise and society

 

  1. Professionalism

Students will demonstrate life-long learning through the continuous enhancement of their professional knowledge and skills by:

  • Functioning as a productive team member in an allied health professional setting
  • Continuing to seek professional educational opportunities
  • Seeking to enhance their abilities by the addition of pertinent certification

Degree Completion Requirements


  • Complete all required coursework and Capstone requirement (36-39 credit hours) for your concentration with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. 
  • Must meet all financial responsibility to the university. 
  • Time to completion of degree must be within five years  
  • Apply for graduation

Coursework Restrictions for the Master of Science in Nutrition and Human Performance


DC students concurrently enrolled in the Master’s degree program are not allowed to take online Master’s coursework for courses required in the DC degree program.

Students are encouraged to select their area of concentration as soon a possible.  Once a concentration is selected, students may change their concentration one time during their matriculation in the Nutirtion program.  Multiple changes may lead to additional coursework, loss of financial aid funds, and additional time to completion of degree.

Master of Science Time to Completion Policy


  1. Students may start coursework at three different times per year (January, May, or September).
  2. Students may be able to complete the necessary requirements in less than five semesters, but should be aware that some classes may not be offered each semester.
  3. Students must finish coursework within five calendar years from the date of initial enrollment. Any student wishing to extend the five-year completion requirement must secure the approval of the Dean of the College of Health Sciences.
